Church Women United
Church Women United is a racially, culturally, theologically inclusive Christian women’s movement, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice. Founded in 1941, CWU is a movement which represents Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women. It is biblically based, sharing the Christian faith. It is organized into more than 1,200 local and state units working for peace and justice in the United States and Puerto Rico. CWU is supported by constituents in state and local units and denominational women’s organizations. CWU act on behalf of women and children throughout the world and is recognized as a non-governmental organization by the United Nations.
Holly Hall
Holly Hall is Houston’s first retirement community, founded in 1949. Strong community support and philanthropy has allowed Holly Hall to operate since its inception without federal, state or agency funding. Situated on 20 wooded acres near the Texas Medical Center, this Christian retirement community offers the full continuum of care to its residents, including several independent living options and state-licensed assisted living and health care environments. Holly Hall does not receive Medicare or Medicaid payments to offset costs, but continues to rely on support from churches, families, foundations and individuals to keep its legacy of caring and community involvement alive.
Larkin Community Center
The Mission Statement for Larkin Community Center is; a community of caring people reaching out to provide childcare, education, and assistance to neighborhood families and individuals, empowering them to meet life’s challenges. Larkin Community Center has been operated and supported by MDUMC since 1983. They provide child day care and after school care Monday through Friday, ESL classes, an emergency food pantry, emergency services, and seasonal ministries (which includes Thanksgiving turkeys, toys for children, Christmas food bags, and school supplies for children in Pre-K – 5th grade).
Memorial Assistance Ministries
Memorial Assistance Ministries is dedicated to helping individuals and families who find themselves in temporary crisis and in need of assistance to maintain self-sufficiency and avoid homelessness. MAM works to provide the working poor faced with immediate personal and family crises, emergency financial assistance and other services designed to put clients back on their feet. MAM works closely with the local school district to identify and assist economically at risk children who might otherwise drop out of school at an early age. MAM provides emergency services, a resale store, and ESL classes.
Wesley Community Center
Wesley Community Center was founded in 1904 by a group of women from First United Methodist Church with the mission of improving the quality of life for mothers and their young children in Houston’s Near Northside neighborhood. For more than 100 years, Wesley Community Center has dedicated its time and effort to improving the integrity of the Northside Village community of Houston while providing opportunities for personal growth to its residents. WCC is determined and committed to fill the needs of Houston’s underserved communities. Through childhood services, youth initiatives, senior programs, and emergency assistance they are positively affecting the lives of over 16,000 individuals a year.
